Ingredients
2½ cups all-purpose flourDairy & Eggs

1½ cups granulated sugar

1 cup buttermilk

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon blue food coloring

Optional for frosting:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

½ cup unsalted butter, softenedHerbs & Spices

4 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and prepare pans
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.

Step 2: Mix the dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and baking soda.

Step 3: Cream butter and sugar
In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Stir in vanilla extract.

Step 4: Combine wet and dry
Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Add blue food coloring and gently fold until the color is evenly distributed.
