n many countries, the retail price of a cigarette pack is made up of several components. These typically include the manufacturer’s base price, distributor and retailer margins, and various taxes added by national or local governments. In some cases, taxes can make up more than half of the final price consumers pay at the store.
There are usually two main types of tobacco taxes applied to cigarettes. The first is a specific excise tax, which is a fixed amount charged per pack or per number of cigarettes. For example, a government might charge a certain amount for every pack of 20 cigarettes sold, regardless of the brand’s price.
