I always assumed that the weird little gap in the cup holder in my old car was just part of the molded plastic until I saw someone post about it online. After noticing it myself, however, I could hardly see anything else except that gap in nearly every car I rode in. And that narrow gap between two cups seemed to be an odd “design choice” after all.
It turns out… it usually is.

Most of us use cup holders daily without ever considering why they’re made the way they are. However, there are a multitude of very small practical design choices that are present throughout car interiors that provide unspoken assistance for driving.
The gap between cup holders is another one of those practical design elements.
As I dug into it a bit more, I found that the reason behind the existence of the gap between car cup holders is relatively straightforward, although it does vary slightly based on the type of vehicle.
What Is the Gap Between Cups in Car Cup Holder For?
In many vehicles, the gap between car cup holders is primarily there to allow consumers to grab cups more easily, keep different-sized cups stabilized, and prevent two cups from being pressed together in an awkward position.
Often, that middle area works more like a flexible zone rather than a separate compartment.
Example: When two large beverages are placed side by side in a car’s cup holder, the open space allows enough room for your fingers to grab one beverage without smacking your knuckles into the adjacent beverage. It seems insignificant, but once you start noticing it, it starts to make sense.

Additionally, in some cars, the cup holder slot also helps support mug handles. If you’ve ever used a travel mug with a handle without realizing it, you likely have taken advantage of the space. In such cases, the handle rests within that middle opening and the circular section provides additional stability for the beverage itself.
This isn’t universally applicable among every automobile manufacturer.
Some car makers simply use the divider for positioning and finger access, while others design the area specifically for handling mugs or oversized bottles. The overall design of a car cup holder differs greatly depending on the brand, available console space, and the intended target audience for each specific vehicle model.
One thing I learned the hard way is that auto manufacturers no longer typically design interior components with only a single use in mind. Instead, most parts perform several small functions at the same time.
How Did Cup Holders Become So Diverse?
Cup holders were generally much simpler in the past because beverages were smaller. That is clearly no longer the case today.
Because consumers carry huge insulated tumblers, reusable water bottles, iced coffee cups, energy drink cups, and mugs with big handles, designing a single holder shape that accommodates all of them has proven quite difficult.
As a result, cup holders commonly appear asymmetrical or irregularly shaped today.
